  • To commemorate its 10th anniversary in 2006, Candlewood Suites hotels joined forces with Habitat for Humanity to create home ownership opportunities for low-income families, announcing a commitment to build ten houses over the next three years in the U.S., Latin America and India.
  • The first house was completed September 2006 in Dallas, Texas and the second was completed November 2007 in Alcozauca, Mexico. Candlewood Suites hotels will also build Habitat houses in Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Richmond, Wichita, and outside the U.S. in India.

Our history

1995

The Candlewood Suites brand was founded by Jack DeBoer, the forefather of the extended stay segment.

1996

The first Candlewood Suites property opens in Wichita, Kan., U.S. (May 1).

2002

Candlewood Suites hotels are named best in customer satisfaction for 4th quarter 2002 in the Market Metrix Hospitality Index study's extended stay category.

2003

IHG acquires the Candlewood Suites brand from Candlewood Hotel Corporation for $15 million together with an agreement to enter into a management contract with Hospitality Properties Trust (HPT) to manage 76 Candlewood Suites properties.

With acquiring the Candlewood Suites brand, IHG grew its hotel portfolio to six brands.

2004

The Candlewood Suites brand executes more license agreements during the first six months of 2004 with IHG than in the three years prior.

JD Powers and associates recognizes Candlewood Suites hotels as a leader for guest satisfaction in the 2004 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study.

The Candlewood Suites brand launches Candlewood Cares across all hotels, providing a free suite for the night to anyone forced out of their homes due to fire or damage caused by severe weather.

2005

Complimentary wired HSIA available at all Candlewood Suites hotels.

Candlewood Suites hotels are named best in customer satisfaction for 3rd quarter 2005 in the Market Metrix Hospitality Index study's extended stay category.

The Candlewood Suites brand outpaces the extended stay segment in RevPAR growth by more than 27 percent during 2005.

2006

The Candlewood Suites brand reaches 10-year milestone and announces approval of expansion plans outside the U.S. into Canada.

The Candlewood Suites brand completes its first Habitat for Humanity house in Dallas, Texas, U.S.

Candlewood Suites hotels introduce proprietary bedding collection, "Comforts of Home".

The Candlewood Suites brand announces plans for the industry's first mid-priced extended stay hotel development in New York City.

2007

The first Candlewood Suites hotel outside of the U.S. opens in Montreal, Canada.

The Candlewood Suites brand completes its Comforts of Home Bedding Collection rollout at more than 100 hotels in less than 100 days. The brand diverted nearly 260 tons of material from landfills by working in partnership with the National Furniture Bank Association (NFBA) to repurpose the box springs and linens to benefit approximately 4,300 families in need across the U.S.

Candlewood Suites hotels announce a new prototype design creating a comfortable residential look and feel with a new exterior design and paint scheme, an expanded lobby and environmentally-friendly amenities.

The Candlewood Suites brand completes its second Habitat for Humanity house in Mexico.

2008

The Candlewood Suites hotel prototype design debuts with the opening of the Candlewood Suites Sheridan, Wyo., U.S.

The Candlewood Suites brand completes its third Habitat for Humanity house in Detroit, Mich., U.S.

The Candlewood Suites brand announces it will offer complimentary Juan Valdez cafáREALE® coffee in the hotel's 24-hour on-site convenience store, the Candlewood Cupboard.

Candlewood Suites hotels opens its 200th hotel in Rocky Mount, N.C.

2009

The Candlewood Suites brand completes its fourth, fifth and sixth Habitat for Humanity houses in India.

The Candlewood Suites brand opens the first midscale extended stay hotel in New York City just steps away from Times Square.

The 250th Candlewood Suites hotel opens in Kalamazoo, Mich.

2010

The Candlewood Suites brand announces a partnership with Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to create fresh, modern designs to be implemented in public spaces and guest suites at existing and new Candlewood Suites hotels.

The Candlewood Suites brand completes its tenth Habitat for Humanity house in Houston.

2011

The Candlewood Suites brand announces it will be a major associate and primary sponsor of Kalitta Motorsports, one of the most accomplished teams in the history of NHRA (National Hot Rod Association).

Candlewood Suites hotels are named the "Preferred Hotel of NHRA".

2012

A pet-friendly brand, Candlewood Suites launches the "Candlewood Canines" contest on its Facebook page to celebrate and highlight guests who love traveling with their animals.

The Candlewood Suites brand launched the Lending Locker concept, which allows guests can borrow certain necessities for use in their suite on an honor system. Available items include: a desk fan, extra lighting, a rice cooker, small hand tools and more.

The Candlewood Suites brand completes the renovation of 60 HPT-owned properties, equating to 20 percent of the portfolio. The redesigned hotels see an immediate increase in RevPAR and higher HeartBeat (guest satisfaction) scores.
