2008 in review: Delivering a more responsible business is an evolving journey of discovery and innovation: in 2008 we demonstrated tangible progress

In 2008, we completed a detailed carbon footprint analysis and measured energy, water and waste in our owned and managed hotels. We also developed tools to reduce our impacts and completed a major global consumer insight project.

We manage our carbon emissions by focusing on innovative hotel design, construction and operations. When we run out of innovative options to reduce our carbon, we will then seek to offset. Our new global headquarters in the United Kingdom showcases some of our green innovations which will help us reduce our impacts and allow us to measure our progress against reducing carbon and energy.

Our people and local communities were also key focuses in 2008. We continued to invest in our communities through the expansion of our IHG Academy programme which has been extremely successful in China. By creating local opportunities we are seeking to create a sustainable future for our hotel business whilst ensuring that we are supporting our communities. Our updated human rights policy shows our commitment in this key area and we are currently implementing it throughout the business.

In this section:

Find out more about the key areas of work undertaken in 2008; this incorporates progress against our key performance indicators and a review of our achievements:
