Environment: We are aiming to make a night with IHG more carbon efficient

We are working towards this goal through innovation and collaboration. We now have a much clearer picture of what a green hotel looks like and realising this vision is how we will reduce our impact on the environment.

At IHG we are addressing our environmental challenges through technology, partnerships, and process improvements. We are dedicated to enhancing our guests’ stay, our communities and the global environment. That is why we are aiming to further improve the environmental management of our hotels, as well as the processes used to build them – whether they are owned, managed, or franchised hotels.

Knowing what impact we currently have is crucial and in 2008 we hit our target to expand measurement of water, energy and waste in our owned and managed estate. In 2009, we will be building on this understanding by launching our new online sustainability tool called Green Engage.

Interest in our impacts on the environment, especially our carbon emissions, is growing. Hotels require energy to support heating and air conditioning systems, laundry service, hot water, food preparation and storage in order to operate effectively for our guests.

Our hotel operations will be better managed to lower our carbon dioxide emissions. We are seeking to reduce the per night emissions of an average room night.

In this section:

Building on our established environmental policy, in 2009 our objective is to make a night with us more carbon efficient. This will drive our efforts to design, construct and operate more sustainable hotels. We have a variety of tools which enable us to successfully track our progress and educate our hoteliers on what they can do to make their hotels more sustainable. Read more in this section about:
