Summary of performance
In 2013 we continued to make corporate responsibility part of the way we do business and to put CR at the heart of our vision to become one of the world’s great companies.
Our CR ambition is to transform hospitality for more sustainable communities and better lives. We work to find innovative ways to build and run hotels that can fulfil our brand promises, tackle the environmental and social challenges we face and create shared value for IHG and our stakeholders.
We continue to focus our activities in the two areas that make sense to our business and where we believe we can make the most difference – the environment and the community. We drive environmental sustainability through our online environmental tool, IHG Green Engage, and we create local economic opportunity, particularly through the IHG Academy, and we provide shelter when disaster strikes through the IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme.
We continued to refine our strategic approach to CR, spearheaded by our CR Committee at Board level. In 2013 we focused on the global expansion and driving quality around the IHG Academy, the continued activation of the IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme, the ongoing roll-out of IHG Green Engage and our CR stakeholder engagement channels such as our online CR Report and IHG Planet CR Facebook page.
Over 2,600 of our hotels have signed up to IHG Green Engage, using the tool to support them on their journey to be more environmentally responsible and cost efficient.
We have over 300 IHG Academy programmes in 50 countries around the world and our vision is to have as many IHG hotels as possible participating in an IHG Academy. In 2013 we raised $1.2 million for the IHG Shelter Fund enabling the IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme to be activated to support 15 disasters across 8 countries providing support for our guests, employees and hotels in times of need.
Our stakeholders play a key role in helping us define and address our priorities. During the year we continued to engage with our stakeholders through a number of channels including videos, forums, meetings, trade shows, individual interviews, surveys and through our websites such as our CR Report, IHG Planet CR Facebook page and our CR Resource Centre located on our intranet, Merlin.
We recognise that we are on a journey and there are challenges we need to manage along the way; we see these as opportunities to further improve the way we carry out our strategy. In 2014 we will continue to focus on improving how we communicate our CR priorities to our broad range of stakeholders, drive environmental sustainability and have a positive impact in the communities in which we operate.
Performance against targets and priorities set in 2013
In September 2013 we launched a set of external targets. These five-year targets, 2013-2017, align with our CR priorities and our core programmes, IHG Green Engage, IHG Academy and the IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme. These targets signal our commitment to doing business responsibly and to crating shared value for IHG, our owners, the environment and the local community.

Reduce carbon footprint per occupied room by 12% across our entire estate
We achieved a 2.4% reduction in our carbon footprint per occupied room between 2012 and 2013 and are on track to achieve our 12% target by 2017.
Reduce water use per occupied room in water stressed areas by 12%
We achieved a 4.6% reduction in water use per occupied room in water stressed areas between 2012-2013 and we are on track to achieve our 12% target by 2017.
Integrate CR criteria into the section and evaluation process for all preferred suppliers
Established a procurement and CR working group to progress with our target to integrate CR criteria into the selection and evaluation process for all preferred suppliers.
Work with all hotels enrolled in IHG Green Engage to make best use of the tool to help them reduce their environmental impacts and operating costs
Launched a revised set of Green Solutions, action items within IHG Green Engage which our hotels can follow to manage their environmental impacts.
Continue to work with IHG Owners Association to enrol more of our franchised hotels in IHG Green Engage
We continued to increase the number of franchised hotels enrolled in IHG Green Engage. The IHG Owners Association Responsible Business Committee is helping to drive engagement of the programme.
Continue our active engagement with the Hotel Carbon Measurement initiative(HCMI) to increase the use of carbon methodology in our industry
Supported the launch of the HCMI 1.1, the global carbon standard that IHG helped to develop in collaboration with ITP, WTTC and 22 other leading hotel companies.
2013 - 2017 Targets
Provide skills and improved employability to 20,000 people via the IHG Academy
Improved the employability of 6391 IHG Academy participants in 2013 equating to 32% of our 2013-2017 target of 20,000 people.
Contribute a total of $10m to communities through monetary donations and in kind support, including funds deployed through the IHG Shelter in Storm Programme

Track and report supply chain diversity
Established a procurement and CR working group to progress with our target to track and report supply chain diversity.
Continue to expand the IHG Academy throughout our estate making sure the programmes deliver positive and transformal results for partcipants and IHG
In 2013 we continued to expand the IHG Academy to 301 programmes – an increase of over 144 during 2013, involving over 160 hotels across 50 countries.
Continue to increase awareness of and engagement with the IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme, ensuring our hotels are prepared for disaster and able to respond quickly and effectively to help the local community and employees when needed
Employees have continued to engage with and participate in fundraising events to raise funds for the IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme enabling us to respond to disasters quickly.
Continue to provide ways for employees in all our hotels and corporate offices to take an active part in the IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme by raising awareness and funds for the IHG Shelter Fund
In September 2013, IHG employees from 60 countries took part in IHG Race Around the World, our global fundraising initiative that encourages hotel and corporate staff to undertake physical activities such as cycling and swimming.
Increase awareness of our approach to CR across internal and external stakeholder groups, and continue to share updates on each programme
We continued to engage with our internal and external stakeholders groups through a variety of formats and channels. In September we held an investor breakfast for new and existing shareholders to update them on our CR approach, key programmes and priorities.
Get more people engaged with our IHG Planet CR Facebook page, particularly around our three core programmes
We continued to increase engagement of our three core programmes through the IHG Planet CR Facebook page. Over 22,000 like the IHG Planet CR Facebook page.
Review our Corporate Responsibility Report in light of the new Global Reporting Initiative G4 guidelines
Ensure CR is integrated with the new General Managers training module
Worked with Human Resources to ensure that CR is embedded into IHG’s General Manager training programme.
Engage with a broader cross-section of our owners in public policy
We engaged owners in public affairs at IHG Owners Association summits and through a government relations workshop at the IHG Owners conference.
