Recycled paper
Hotels can get through a lot of paper. Buying recycled paper keeps waste paper out of landfill and is better for the environment.
A study commissioned by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) concluded that recycled paper is better for the environment than virgin paper. According to the study:
- Over the full lifecycle, 1 tonne of 100% recycled paper saves 1.32 tonnes of CO2 emissions when compared to virgin paper
- Paper in landfill can produce methane, a greenhouse gas that's 23 times more powerful than CO2
- Recycling rather than incinerating paper uses 50% less energy over the entire lifecycle
- Recycling is better than landfill, considering energy use, energy related impacts, waste generation, waste water and reduction of carbon emissions
- Recycling is better than incineration, considering energy use, energy related impacts, toxicity, waste water and reduction of carbon emissions.
Hotels can also cut back back on the amount of paper they use in the first place and recycle the paper that they use.
