Around the world, we work to have a positive impact on communities through creating jobs, stimulating local economic development, helping create more sustainable communities through skills building opportunities and ensuring our hotels are prepared in the event of a disaster. Through our work, we are helping to contribute to the delivery of the United Nations SDGs.
The IHG Academy provides opportunities for local people from all walks of life to build their knowledge and skills, improve their employability, and kick start a career in the hospitality industry. It’s our way of opening our doors and creating opportunities for all.
With an expanding portfolio of hotels, we have a pressing business need to identify and develop talented people who will bring them to life. By working with local communities, and in partnership with others, we help develop a pool of skilled, motivated and engaged people, who are committed to providing the consistently great experience that our guests expect.
Within a global framework, each IHG Academy is unique, ensuring that the programme meets the needs of the local community it serves. All IHG Academy programmes operate together with local community organisations and/or education providers to offer participants real experience of working in a hotel or corporate office. The IHG Academy improves the chances of participants finding a job in the hotel sector, in many cases in one of our hotels.
IHG Academy Frontier programme
Since 2016, 34 IHG Academy participants from hotels across China have had the opportunity to take part in the IHG Frontier programme. Participants on IHG Academy programmes in China are given the opportunity to take part in the cross-regional work experience programme in hotels across Asia Pacific. They spend six months broadening their hospitality skills as they adapt to working in new cultures, learning new languages and experiencing working in different IHG branded hotels, whilst the hotel benefits as the participants are helping the hotels to better cater to the needs of Chinese travellers. As part of their placement, the participants work in a variety of roles including food and beverage, housekeeping and guest services.
Eason, former IHG Academy participant at the Holiday Inn Kandooma Maldives and now IHG Future Leader, working as a Guest Services Agent at Intercontinental Shanghai NECC said ‘IHG Frontier gave me a good opportunity to work overseas, training in the Maldives for six months. It broadened my horizons.’
Youth Career Initiative (YCI)
Partnering with the Youth Career Initiative (YCI), we are offering young people who have faced difficult challenges a viable way to improve their employability so that they can find legitimate work. Through the IHG Academy partnership, more than 350 young people have taken part in work experience placements in IHG hotels in South America, Asia and Africa with many participants finding employment in the hospitality industry immediately after.
