Brits Consume Nearly 1,000 Extra Calories A Day When Staying Away From Home

  • Nearly two thirds (61%) of British travellers gain weight after a trip, adding an extra 17% worth of calories to their daily intake
  • Missing home comforts, 1 in 2 Brits (54%) wish they could prepare their own meals while away
  • Celebrity Chef Matt Tebbutt creates ‘Tastes of Home’ recipes for Staybridge Suites® guests

Almost two thirds (61%) of Brits admit to gaining weight after they’ve been on a trip away from home, with more than one in three (36%) admitting to eating nearly 1,000 additional calories a day when travelling, according to new research. During a trip, three quarters (75%) of Brits confess to overeating, particularly at dinner time, with women more likely to overindulge than men.

The study, commissioned by extended-stay hotel brand Staybridge Suites® (an IHG® hotel), revealed that Brits spend on average one night away from home each month. Eating on the go and a lack of home cooked meals are the main causes for overindulging while away on holiday or business. Over a half of Brits (54%) wish that they could eat more home cooked meals while staying at hotels and a quarter (26%) blame the lack of a kitchen to prepare meals as the main reason for their unhealthy habits when away from home.

The three dishes Brits miss most when travelling are:

  • Roast Dinner with Yorkshire Pudding (24%)
  • Fish and Chips (15%)
  • Spaghetti Bolognaise (13%)

The research also found that the fear of not having home comforts leads to some travellers bringing their own food items along on the trip. Being a nation of tea lovers, a quarter (25%) of Brits keep their own stash of teabags in their luggage to ensure that their brews are exactly how they like them. One in nine ensure they have packets of crisps on hand and one in ten keep cereals tucked away.

To offer travellers a slice of home, Staybridge Suites has teamed up with British Chef and TV presenter Matt Tebbutt to create ‘Tastes of Home’ - easy, home-cooked recipes which guests can cook while staying at the hotel. As an all-suite extended stay brand, every Staybridge Suites room includes a fully equipped kitchen, so guests can easily prepare their own meals. Matt Tebbutt’s recipes are now available to guests upon check-in and they can even follow easy video instructions via the TV in their room.

Celebrity Chef Matt Tebbutt commented: “As someone who is constantly on the road, I know how easy it is to overindulge when you’re eating out every day and night. That’s why I’m thrilled to partner with Staybridge Suites to bring their guests quick, easy and tasty recipes that they can enjoy from the comfort of their suite. I’ve created variations on some of the nation’s favourites, including a healthier Fish and Chips, a unique twist on a traditional Spaghetti Bolognese, and a mouth-watering Ditalini pasta dish with poached chicken and a tarragon dressing. I can’t wait for guests to give them a try.”

Guest will be able to recreate Matt’s ‘Tastes of Home’ recipes for themselves when staying at any of the six Staybridge Suites properties across the UK, located in London, Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester.

Raul Ortiz, VP of Global Brand Marketing for Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites at IHG commented: “Our research clearly shows that Brits miss home cooked, fresh meal choices while travelling. Our guests are often away from home for days or weeks at a time and we want to give them the option to cook for themselves as if they were in the comfort of their own home. While staying at Staybridge Suites, guests have access to a spacious, fully equipped kitchen with all the utensils they need, and thanks to Matt’s recipes, they can now enjoy a new take on a ‘Taste of Home’ even when they’re on the road.”

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary in Europe this year, Staybridge Suites is set to double its size in the region over the next two years, opening seven new properties and entering new markets such as Poland, The Netherlands and Germany.

Additional Findings:

  • Catching trains, socialising, and eating out leaves little time for people to factor in healthy eating, with a third (36%) totting up an additional 1,736 calories every month for the average two-day trip.
  • Women admitted to overeating while away from home 16% more likely than men.
  • 4 in 10 Brits say eating out with others impacts their ability to make healthy choices.
  • 17% per cent of adults stash chocolate bars into their bags one in 10 will bring along cereal while on a trip.
  • Over half (58%) have felt guilty about their eating habits away from home, with one in 10 feeling so guilt-ridden they will even lie to their partner about their diet.
